Selection FAQ

Check below for some common questions about our Selection Weekend events and finalist notification process. If you have additional questions not answered here, please feel free to contact us.
At CSS Selection Weekend, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn more about the CSS program and the many opportunities it offers
  • Hear faculty and students talk about their exciting experiences in your field of interest
  • Meet new friends who are ambitious and passionate about STEM like you

You will also interview with Carolina faculty and staff, giving us a chance to get to know you beyond the information in your Common Application. You’ll leave with a better understanding of the CSS mission and of the depth and breadth of STEM academics at UNC.

CSS invites approximately 120 finalists to our Selection Weekend each year. Finalists receive an invitation via email in late January, after UNC’s early action admissions decisions are sent.
Our next Selection Weekend will take place February 19-20, 2021. In the interest of keeping all participants safe and healthy this year, all Selection Weekend events will take place virtually. Finalists should plan to join us for live Zoom events on Friday, February 19 from 7-9 pm and on Saturday, February 20 from 1-4:30 pm. (All times are Eastern times.) Pre-recorded content, including lab tour videos, and specific event links will be shared with finalists on Monday, February 15. Additional information will be shared here as soon as it becomes available.
Be yourself! In your interview, UNC faculty and staff will ask questions that help us get to know you better – your interests in STEM, your future goals, how you want to make a difference in the world – so the best way to prepare is to just relax and let us know what makes you tick. The interview also offers you a chance to ask questions about CSS and Carolina.
Yes, we invite our finalists to attend Selection Weekend and to respond to two supplemental essay prompts. The essays are short, no more than 350 words each, and will be included in our final consideration, along with your interview and other Common Application materials. Essays must be submitted by February 9th in order to be considered.
All final decisions and scholarship offers will be sent via email approximately two weeks after Selection Weekend. Recipients will have until April 15, 2021 to accept the scholarship offer.
