Research Interest: Studying the brain at a molecular level to advance knowledge in the field of mental health

I hope to pursue some Portuguese studies in my Linguistics major and combine science with language to connect with scientists from other countries.

What attracted you to the CSS program and Carolina?

CSS’s close knit community of individuals committed to increasing diversity in STEM and making strides in the field of science is a group that I can see myself both fitting in and contributing to during my college experience. Carolina also provides many opportunities to expand my horizons and study abroad as well: one of my main goals in undergrad.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at Carolina over the next four years?

I am looking forward to joining a neuroscience lab (hopefully during my first year)! I am also looking forward to advancing my study of the Spanish language and taking a summer or semester abroad in Quito, Ecuador. I also hope to pursue some Portuguese studies in my Linguistics major and combine science with language to connect with scientists from other countries.

What research topic(s) are you interested in exploring and why?

I am interested in studying the brain at a molecular level to advance the knowledge in the field of mental health, especially for LGBTQ+ teens, to analyze the causes of such conditions and find healthy solutions.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your future STEM career?

I hope to complete research in a Spanish-speaking country and use my language skills to connect with individuals from backgrounds different than my own. I love the idea of bringing interdisciplinary studies into STEM.
