What attracted you to the CSS program and Carolina?

From the moment I learned about Carolina’s academic opportunities, innovative research, and sense of community, I knew that UNC fit my definition of a university. So, when I learned that I had been selected to be a part of CSS Cohort 10, I was set on Carolina. Not only would I be provided countless opportunities for research, but I would also be able to explore options for graduate school, all with the support of a phenomenal community and program.

What are you most looking forward to experiencing at Carolina over the next four years?

I am most excited for the social events on campus, specifically the basketball games and club fairs!

What research topic(s) are you interested in exploring and why?

One research topic that has piqued my interest is the cross-section of Artificial Intelligence and racial bias. I first became interested in this topic when I was able to unlock my sister’s phone via facial recognition, even when we look strikingly different. With a bit of research, I discovered that people of color are not accurately represented in the world of AI and are often excluded in computer algorithms/models. With that, I became committed to addressing this issue.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your future STEM career?

In my future STEM career, I hope to make an impact, no matter how significant, on those who are represented in my fields of interest.
