WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE CSS PROGRAM AND CAROLINA?

After completing my interview and talking with former scholars, I came to the realization that CSS was a place one could call home—one that, while challenging, would guide me towards a successful future. As a first-generation college student, I needed a university that offered excellent research opportunities, strong mentorship, and affordability. UNC met all of my requirements, and I’m happy to be a member of Carolina, the top public institution in the whole nation.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPERIENCING AT CAROLINA OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS?

Over the next four years at Carolina, I’m most excited about immersing myself in a vibrant academic community where I can explore cutting-edge research and innovative projects. I look forward to engaging with passionate faculty mentors who will challenge and inspire me, as well as collaborating with fellow students who share my enthusiasm for learning and discovery. Additionally, I’m eager to take advantage of the diverse extracurricular opportunities and community experiences that Carolina offers, which will help me grow both personally and professionally. Overall, I can’t wait to be part of a dynamic environment that fosters growth, creativity, and lifelong connections. Not just that but I look forward to graduating with my cohort 12!

WHAT RESEARCH TOPIC(S) ARE YOU INTERESTED IN EXPLORING AND WHY?

I’m naturally curious and would love to explore many fields, but if I had to choose two, I’d focus on cancer research and environmental science. In cancer research, I’m particularly fascinated by cancer genetics—understanding how genetic mutations, epigenetic changes, and gene expression patterns contribute to cancer’s development and progression. On the other hand, my passion for nature drives me to address environmental issues and would love to help by conducting research on how to reduce greenhouse gases or even come up with something that’ll help.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR FUTURE STEM CAREER?

I am excited to conduct research and work towards my goal of becoming a pediatrician. I also hope to serve as an example to fellow first-generation Latinos, demonstrating that success is achievable regardless of your background.
