FAQ’s – Selection Weekend
At CSS Selection Weekend, you will have the opportunity to:
- Learn more about the CSS program and the many opportunities it offers
- Hear faculty and students talk about their exciting experiences in your field of interest
- Meet new friends who are ambitious and passionate about STEM like you
You will also interview with Carolina faculty and staff, giving us a chance to get to know you beyond the information in your Common Application. You’ll leave with a better understanding of the CSS mission and of the depth and breadth of STEM academics at UNC.
Be yourself! In your interview, UNC faculty and staff will ask questions that help us get to know you better – your interests in STEM, your future goals, how you want to make a difference in the world – so the best way to prepare is to just relax and let us know what makes you tick. The interview also offers you a chance to ask questions about CSS and Carolina.
The CSS program does not provide lodging for Selection Weekend, however there are many hotels in Chapel Hill and Carrboro in close proximity to campus. Many offer shuttles to and from campus, as well as a guest rate for UNC visitors. For options in the Chapel Hill area, we recommend checking out the town’s visitor website.
On Friday evening, please park at the Ram’s Head parking garage. The rate is $1.75 per hour. On Saturday morning, please park at the Kenan Labs/Morehead parking lot N11, located on South Road, or at the Bell Tower parking deck, located on Bell Tower Drive. There is no charge for Saturday parking. Download a campus map for more information.
Business casual is appropriate for Friday’s dinner and program. We encourage business attire for Saturday’s interview. Please note that Saturday’s activities will include some walking, so consider wearing comfortable shoes.
All final decisions and scholarship offers will be sent via email approximately two weeks after Selection Weekend. Recipients will have until April 15, 2020 to accept the scholarship offer.
Yes, we invite our finalists to attend Selection Weekend and to respond to two supplemental essay prompts. The essays are short, no more than 350 words each, and will be included in our final consideration, along with your interview and other Common Application materials. Essays must be submitted by February 12th in order to be considered.
Yes, please do! We’re happy to accommodate one guest for the weekend’s events. A parents or guardian is welcome as your guest, and we have special events planned for them on Friday and Saturday.
While finalists are participating in their own events, we have activities scheduled for guests as well, including Q&A sessions with CSS staff, parents of current CSS scholars, and CSS alumni. Guests will join the finalists for information sessions about the various STEM majors at Carolina.
Yes. We understand that finalists may have previously scheduled events that conflict with Selection Weekend activities. If that is the case, please contact Ann Taylor Shaw at email@example.com to make other interview arrangements. You must still submit the required supplemental essays by the February 12th deadline.
